CERN welcomes elected representatives of Geneva communes
On 7 and 8 October and 12 November, Science Gateway hosted elected representatives of the administrative and municipal councils of communes within the Canton of Geneva. The aim of this brand new initiative was to introduce the new officials, elected during the Swiss local elections in spring 2025, to the Organization’s mission and activities. With more than half of Geneva’s communes represented, these events had a significant reach and demonstrated the interest of the local authorities in the Laboratory. Similar events, for example with elected officials from the neighbouring French communes, may be held in the future.
Following a welcome address by the Director-General, Fabiola Gianotti, the guests heard several talks highlighting CERN’s essential role in fundamental research on a global scale and in the development of innovative technologies and their applications for society. These evenings also offered an opportunity to present the industrial and socioeconomic impact of CERN’s activities in Switzerland, as well as its local outreach activities, including public events, temporary exhibitions and dedicated programmes for pupils, teachers, artists and economic players.
The participants then explored Science Gateway, immersing themselves in the Organization’s educational activities. They attended science shows, took part in laboratory workshops and visited the permanent exhibition, all of which underline CERN’s strong commitment to making science accessible and captivating for audiences of all kinds. This visit was a strong reminder of Science Gateway’s important role in spreading scientific culture, facilitating dialogue between science and society and paving the way for new forms of cooperation with the local communes, notably on educational and cultural projects. Afterwards, the guests had the opportunity to talk to members of various CERN services.
By raising awareness of the Organization among the local authorities, this series of events has helped to strengthen our ties with our neighbours and to inspire new avenues for collaboration.
